The first payment will be in October, for October and November the payments will be £66, and then £67 per month December – March. The grant is applied to domestic electric meters.
- Paying by DD or regular bills – the grant payments will be automatically credited to the electricity account
- Smart meters – the grants will be automatically credited to smart meters
- Non-Smart prepayment meters – this is where it could get more difficult. Account holders will receive a voucher code, either by email, text or post, issued in the first week of each month. People can redeem these where they usually top-up their meter (shops or post offices). But this relies on the energy provider having up to date contact info for each account holder. I would recommend that we remind all our tenants with pre-pay meters to:
o Make sure they know who their energy provider is (it’s not always the name on the key/card)
o Ensure the account is in their name
o Ensure their contact information is up to date, and ideally provide a mobile phone number or email address
o Remember not to ignore any letters from their energy provider, as it could be relating to the vouchers
We’re also all being advised to stay alert to scams – energy companies will not ask for bank details etc to pay the grant, as it will be automatically credited to energy accounts, or issued as vouchers.
National Energy Action, and other charities have raised concerns that this system will not benefit everyone - people that pay for energy with their rent, or situations where one meter serves several households (such as Jarvis Court, and Tramaine House), will not benefit directly from this. We don’t currently have a solution, but I will let you know if anything changes.
