osprey living wage

Osprey Housing Group has been accredited as a Living Wage employer after successfully negotiating with its affected suppliers to match the minimum hourly rates required.

Osprey itself has been paying at least the Living Wage to its own staff since its inception, but could not achieve the accreditation until affected third party contracted staff also received the minimum hourly rate of £8.75.

Chief Executive Glenn Adcook said: “This accreditation is very welcome and it makes a clear statement both about the type of employer we want to be and what we expect of our suppliers.

“We are delighted that we have been able to negotiate with contractors concerned to promote payment of Living Wage rates and we felt a shared responsibility with our suppliers to ensure their staff, connected to Osprey, benefited. This is an important statement about Osprey as the latest Scottish Parliament figures show there are still nearly half a million employees in Scotland earning under the real Living Wage.”

The accreditation programme in Scotland launched in April 2014. It is an initiative from The Poverty Alliance in partnership with the Living Wage Foundation and is funded by the Scottish Government. The Living Wage rate is significantly higher than the statutory minimum for over 25s of £7.50 per hour introduced in April 2017.

Peter Kelly, Director of the Poverty Alliance, said: “The real Living Wage is one of the key tools at our disposal to help make an impact on levels of in-work poverty in Scotland. There is a strong business case for paying the Living Wage, but crucially allows those in work to become more included in society, better provide for their families, and feel that their value and hard work is recognised by their employer.

“We are delighted to congratulate Osprey on becoming a Living Wage employer, joining the growing movement of over 1000 companies in Scotland who want to go further than the government minimum and recognise that Living Wage accreditation is the mark of a responsible employer. I hope more organisations follow their lead by becoming accredited.”

Osprey has 1,800 properties in ownership and management in 70 communities in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray. It employs 34 staff in its offices in Westhill and Lossiemouth.

scrutiny cafe event

We want to support a group of tenants to challenge our performance and come up with ideas on how to improve our services. The group may decide to interview staff, do some mystery shopping, visit empty properties, ask tenants to fill in a survey or review our practices.

An informal café event is taking place at the Town House, High St, Inverness, IV1 1JJ on 16 February from 11am-3pm. The aim is to give tenants the opportunity to talk with tenants of other landlords about their experiences of being part of a scrutiny group.

With the first week of 2018 coming to an end we would like to wish all associated with Osprey Housing and Osprey Housing Moray a happy and healthy new year.

To concentrate on the latter for a moment, many streets and path are still hazardous and with temperatures being variable ice can be a factor for many weeks to come. No matter how well the snow and ice is removed from car parks and pavements, pedestrians will still encounter some slippery surfaces when walking outdoors in the winter. It is important for everyone to be constantly aware of these dangers and to learn to walk safely on ice and slippery surfaces.

It is recommended that you keep these important safety tips in mind when walking on ice:

  • In cold temperatures, approach with caution and assume that all wet, dark areas on pavements are slippery and icy. Dew or water vapour can freeze on cold surfaces, forming an extra-thin, nearly invisible layer of ice that can look like a wet spot on the pavement.
  • Walk in designated walkways as much as possible. Taking shortcuts over snow piles and other frozen areas can be hazardous. Look ahead when you walk; a snow- or ice-covered sidewalk or driveway, especially if on a hill, may require travel along its grassy edge for traction.
  • Taking shortcuts through areas where snow and ice removal is not feasible can be hazardous.
  • Bend slightly and walk flat-footed with your centre of gravity directly over the feet as much as possible.
  • Extend your arms out to your sides to maintain balance. Beware if you are carrying a heavy backpack or other load—your sense of balance will be off.
  • If you must carry a load, try not to carry too much; leave your hands and arms free to balance yourself.
  • Keep your hands out of your pockets. Hands out of your pockets while walking lowers your centre of gravity and increases balance. You can help break your fall with your hands free if you do start to slip.
  • Watch where you are stepping and GO S-L-O-W-L-Y !! This will help your reaction time to changes in traction.
  • When walking on steps always use the hand railings and plant your feet firmly on each step.
  • Use special care when entering and exiting vehicles; use the vehicle for support.
  • Take short steps or shuffle for stability. It also helps to stop occasionally to break momentum.
  • Choose Appropriate Clothing - avoid boots or shoes with smooth soles and heels, such as plastic and leather soles. Instead, wear shoes or boots that provide traction on snow and ice; boots made of non-slip rubber or neoprene with grooved soles are best. Wear a bright scarf or hat or reflective gear so drivers can see you. Keep warm, but make sure you can hear what's going on around you. Whatever you wear, make sure it doesn't block your vision or make it hard for you to hear traffic.

Wherever 2018 takes you please take care!
