Osprey farewell to pivotal figure

One of Osprey Housing’s longest-serving board members has stepped down after nearly 20 years’ service.

Bill Chapman - board chair for the past three years — became a tenant of Osprey forerunner Aberdeenshire Housing Partnership tenant in 2000. He joined the AHP board in March 2002 and immediately helped drive the organisation in a direction that recognised the importance of listening to, engaging with, and being responsive to tenants’ needs.

Vice-chair Mike Scott paid tribute to Mr Chapman, who stepped down at Osprey’s annual general meeting on 25 September. He said: ‘Bill has been a truly pivotal figure for the association.

‘His passion and commitment to Osprey, and to our tenants, has been inspirational. As chair he has demonstrated excellent leadership qualities and overall has played a hugely effective and influential role.

‘He has been very much at the heart of everything the Osprey Group has achieved to date and has helped steer us to the excellent position we are now in.’

Mr Chapman has also been actively involved in the wider tenant movement where his commitment has earned the respect of national agencies in Scotland and beyond.

His drive and enthusiasm contributed to the creation of North East Tenants, Residents and Landlords Together (NETRLT), an award-winning partnership of tenants, residents and landlords working together for mutual benefit.

Mr Chapman has been on the board of the Tenant Participation Advisory Service (TPAS), was a previous tenant assessor with the Scottish Housing Regulator and has continued to work alongside the regulator as a member of their Regional Network Tenant Liaison Group. He also served on the Scottish Social Housing Charter Sounding Board formulating the Charter, which came into effect in 2012.

Osprey CEO Glenn Adcook said: ‘It has been an absolute privilege to work with Bill. He has been steadfast and selfless in his approach to championing tenants’ interests, improving social housing standards and continually seeking to improve Osprey as an organisation.

‘We are sad to see him step down but recognise he has his wife, family, and his own health to consider and we wish him the very best.’

osprey and angus the bull

A surprise guest appearance from Aberdeen FC on-loan mascot Angus the Bull ensured great support for a fun filled charity football match organised by staff of Osprey Housing Group - ably supported by European Cup Winners Cup medallist and Gothenburg legend Neil Simpson.

Staff, their families and friends from within the local community and further afield all recently took part in the action at the Lawsondale Pitches in Westhill, Aberdeenshire raising nearly £600 for the Trussell Trust who support a network of foodbanks across Scotland including those local to Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray.

Watched by an enthusiastic and noisy group of spectators the two teams put together by the warm-hearted Osprey staff organisers went head to head, Team Pink (The Osprey Flyers) won the match and much hilarity erupted when mascot Angus the Bull turned out to be Osprey Chief Executive Glenn Adcook! He then went in goal for a highly competitive penalty shoot-out won by Team Yellow (Osprey Majestics) and leaving him feeling that his footballing days are well behind him.

With a mix of ages playing and spectating everyone enjoyed themselves. Glenn Adcook said:
“It was fun but with a real social purpose – I am privileged and proud to have such a hardworking and dedicated staff team who are prepared to commit their own time and effort outside of work to raise funds for such an important cause. Hunger should have no place in modern society yet we are seeing the reliance on food banks increasing”

He added “my sincere thanks to all involved in organising, participating and supporting the event”

This is one of a series of events taking place throughout 2019/20 in which Osprey Housing Group is celebrating its 20th Anniversary by connecting with local communities with the aim of contributing to their sustainability and wellbeing.

osprey peterhead houses

Peterhead’s affordable housing stock received a significant boost this week with the official launch of 23 new homes by Osprey Housing Group

The nine two-bedroom flats and 14 three-bedroom houses in Lingbank Close in the town’s Upper Grange area were officially opened by housing minister Kevin Stewart, who also met some of the new tenants.

Completion of the £3.3 million development was delayed after original developers Deveron Homes went into administration in July 2018, but Osprey acted decisively to work through the administration process and appoint new contractors.

Bancon took over the project in November 2018 and the homes were completed with minimum delay.

Osprey chief executive Glenn Adcook said: “No one likes to see that happen to a local company, particularly one like Deveron with whom we had a good working relationship.

“I want to thank the Osprey team for their diligence and resilience in dealing with a very difficult situation in such an effective way, and Bancon for their skill and expertise in ensuring the homes were completed to such a high standard.”

Mr Adcook also thanked Osprey’s partners, particularly the Scottish Government and Aberdeenshire Council, and added: “Huge praise is due to our tenants who stuck with us despite the delay because they really wanted to move into these fantastic homes.”

Mr Stewart, who is also MSP for Aberdeen Central, said the Osprey homes represented “more than just bricks and mortar” for the tenants.

He added: “Meeting the new tenants at Lingbank Close, it’s clear to see how their new homes have had such a positive impact on their lives.

“These high-quality houses are more than just bricks and mortar - they provide a sense of pride and belonging in a warm, neighbourly setting.

“The success of this development is testament to the strong collaborative working between housing associations, the construction industry, local councils, and the Scottish Government.

“These new homes will help us stay on course to meet our ambitious target of 50,000 affordable homes by 2021, backed by record investment of over £3 billion.”

Councillor Anne Stirling, chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s communities committee, paid tribute to Osprey, saying: “I would like to thank Osprey for their work to ensure completion of this development, and for their ongoing partnership working that is supporting the aims of our strategic housing investment plan to increase the number of affordable housing properties in Aberdeenshire.

“Aberdeenshire Council is pleased to have been able to contribute some £49,000 towards this project.”

The development was supported by a £2.1 million grant from the Scottish Government, Aberdeenshire Council’s contribution, and investment from Osprey’s own private finance facility provided by Lloyds Banking Group.
